Leominster Youth Robotics currently offers many different programs, depending on the grade of the participant.
These programs include:
(grades 1 - 3)
Each summer LYR runs a one week camp at their facility. Students are broken up into
small groups, each following instructions to build fun LEGO contraptions. This is a good way for young
kids to get introduced to our programs and have some fun! The camp also serves as our main source of
fundraising to help to run all of our LYR programs and to be able to provide LYR scholarships to two
graduating LHS seniors each year.
JUNIOR FIRST LEGO LEAGUE (Jr.FLL)
(grades 2 & 3)
Starting every February, LYR Jr.FLL teams take a "hands on" approach to
real-world topics. Teams learn about simple machines as they build a model made of LEGO elements
with a motorized moving part, and also create a team "Show-Me" Poster to represent their findings.
NXT ROBOTIC ADVENTURES
(grades 4 - 6)
This program runs in the fall and is an introduction to the LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT kit,
giving students the ability to build their own robots and program them to perform all types of actions to
complete challenges. Students will learn and use a design methodology that will teach them about the
motors and sensors that their robot can use to solve real-world problems. Small teams are put together
to complete challenges. Each challenge completed will lead to another equally exciting challenge.
(grades 7 - 9)
VEX robotics is a program to introduce students to advanced robotics and engineering. The
VEX robotics design system allows students to program the microcontroller with the "easy C" programming
language. Students compete head-to-head with other robotic teams on a game floor to score more points than their
opponent in an exciting game. The VEX robots can run in autonomous mode or with remote controlled input.
Innovation First holds the trademark for VEX Robotics and manages
of Leominster Youth Robotics.
